What the new subsidised service scheme means for low-income homes in eMbalenhle South

The Govan Mbeki Municipality has begun its Indigent Subsidy Support Programme in Ward 14, assisting low-income households with applications for vital municipal service relief. The registration drive is currently taking place at the eMbalenhle South Community Hall, where municipal officials are helping residents complete their indigent support applications.

The programme is designed to ease the financial burden on vulnerable households by subsidizing basic municipal services such as water, electricity, sewerage, and refuse removal.

To qualify as indigent, a household’s combined gross monthly income (excluding social, foster care, disability, and child grants) must not exceed R6,000. Applicants are required to bring the following documents:
Original ID and proof of residence
Latest municipal account
Proof of income or affidavit of unemployment

Qualifying residents will receive:
100% subsidy on water for up to 10 kilolitres (kl) per month. Usage beyond that will be billed at the standard indigent tariff.
100% subsidy on electricity for up to 50 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month, with additional consumption charged normally.
Relief on sewerage and refuse removal as determined annually by the municipal council.

Municipality officials have encouraged residents of Ward 14 to take advantage of the registration period to ensure they receive the benefits available to them.

For more details or assistance, residents are advised to visit the eMbalenhle South Community Hall during the ongoing registration period.
