SECOND BLASTING NOTICE: Motorists Urged to Take Note of New Date for N2 Road Closure Between Leiden and Camden

Motorists and residents across the Gert Sibande District Municipality are once again advised to take serious note of an upcoming second scheduled blasting operation on the N2 between Leiden and Camden, as part of the ongoing national road improvement project managed by SANRAL, WBHO Construction, and KBK Engineers.

Following the initial blast earlier this month, WBHO Construction has announced that the next controlled blasting will take place on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, between 14h00 and 15h00.

This reminder and updated notification are crucial, community members, transporters, and motorists are urged to note the new date carefully to avoid unnecessary delays or safety risks.

Road Closures and Delays Expected
During the blast, all access roads leading to the affected section — including the national road itself, will be temporarily closed for safety reasons. The section affected lies on the new N2 northbound carriageway between Chainage 65+220 and 65+640.

A maximum delay of approximately one hour is expected on the day of the blast, after which the road will reopen once engineers and safety officials have declared it secure for use.

Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during this period and obey all traffic control personnel and warning signs in the area.

Part of a Major Road Upgrade for Gert Sibande
The blasting is part of the larger N2 Section 34 road improvement project, which spans between Leiden (KM 59.0) and Camden (KM 87.4) within the Msukaligwa Local Municipality. The project, under SANRAL’s direction, aims to upgrade the N2 corridor, improving transport efficiency while creating local employment and empowering emerging contractors through the Contract Participation Goal (CPG) initiative.

Through this programme, local SMMEs, suppliers, and labourers are being directly integrated into construction and support services, from roadwork and plant hire to catering, cleaning, and events management, ensuring that much of the project’s economic benefit stays within the community.

Safety First
“We again appeal to all motorists and residents to take this second blasting notice seriously,” said Mdumiseni Ngwenya, WBHO Assistant Construction Manager. “Safety remains our top priority, and all measures have been put in place to ensure that the operation runs smoothly and safely.”

WBHO Construction has apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation as work continues on this vital infrastructure upgrade.

A Road to Progress
Despite short-term disruptions, the N2 improvement project continues to deliver long-term benefits to the region, including better road safety, smoother travel, and sustainable job creation. Once complete, the upgraded route will serve as a vital link connecting Mpumalanga’s economic hubs with major national corridors, further supporting growth in the Gert Sibande District.
