New Councillor Sworn in at Gert Sibande District Municipality

Bethal-born Hlatshwayo steps into council role after DA withdrawal

Councillor Samukelo Matheu Hlatshwayo has officially joined the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) Council, following a swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday, 10 April, at the Office of the Speaker.The ceremony was conducted by GSDM’s legal representative,

Mr Solomon Mtsweni, and was in line with the Municipal Structures Act. Cllr Hlatshwayo, hailing from Bethal under the Govan Mbeki Municipality, fills the seat left vacant by the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s withdrawal of Cllr Doctor Nkambule.Cllr Nkambule, a directly elected representative to the district council, was acknowledged for his service. “The municipality expresses its appreciation for his contributions,” read part of the official statement.

Welcoming the new councillor, Speaker of Council Cllr Busisiwe Sekhonde said, “We welcome Cllr Samukelo Hlatshwayo to the GSDM Council and extend our full support as he embarks on this new chapter in public service.

As a municipality, we are committed to strengthening governance, deepening democracy, and ensuring that the interests of our communities remain at the forefront of Council’s work.

”The municipality expressed confidence in Hlatshwayo’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the district’s developmental agenda and service delivery goals.
