Chery South Africa is preparing to expand its footprint in the local automotive market with the introduction of new models and brands in 2026, signalling the Chinese manufacturer’s growing ambition in one of Africa’s most competitive car markets.

Speaking during an interview with Khanyisa News, Mr. J. Wang from Cherry Headquarters, who is currently in South Africa as the Deputy Country Director for the Cherry Brand, confirmed that two new brands will be introduced to South African consumers this year, alongside new vehicle launches and advanced hybrid technology.

New brands arriving in March and May

According to Kelvin, the Chery Group plans to launch two additional brands in South Africa during 2026 as part of its broader global expansion strategy.

The first brand, Lepas (Lepard), is expected to debut locally in March, while the second brand, iCaur, is scheduled for May.

These additions will join the brands already sold in South Africa, including Chery’s Tiggo range and the Omoda lineup, which have gained significant popularity among buyers looking for feature-rich SUVs at competitive prices.

“The Chery Group is focused on building brands for the future,” Wang explained, highlighting the company’s long-term strategy of expanding its product portfolio to meet different market segments.

Latest premium models introduced

Chery has also recently introduced new premium vehicles globally, including the Tiggo 9, a flagship SUV positioned above the existing Tiggo range, and the Omoda C7, a modern crossover aimed at buyers seeking advanced technology and stylish design.

These models demonstrate the manufacturer’s intention to move further into the premium SUV market, while maintaining the affordability and value that helped establish the brand in South Africa.

Since re-entering the South African market in November 2021, Chery has experienced strong growth, with models such as the Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro, and Tiggo 8 Pro becoming popular choices among families and first-time SUV buyers.

Hybrid technology for the future

A key part of Chery’s future strategy is its Super Hybrid System, a plug-in hybrid technology designed to deliver better fuel efficiency while improving vehicle performance.

The system allows drivers to enjoy the benefits of electric-assisted driving while retaining the convenience of a traditional fuel-powered vehicle, making it particularly suitable for markets where full electric vehicle infrastructure is still developing.

“With the super hybrid system, customers can get better driving performance and improved fuel efficiency,” Wang explained.

Hybrid technology is expected to play an increasingly important role as global carmakers transition toward cleaner mobility solutions.

AI and smart vehicle technology

Beyond hybrid powertrains, Chery is also investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and smart vehicle technologies that could redefine the driving experience.

Wang noted that modern vehicles are evolving into intelligent machines capable of interacting with drivers through voice commands and digital interfaces.

“In the future, when you buy a car, you are communicating with a robot every day,” he said. “Through voice commands, you can tell the vehicle what you want it to do.”

The company has also showcased AI-powered robots, including one capable of greeting visitors, shaking hands and even preparing coffee. This one is called AiMOGA. The AiMOGA (also known as Mornine) is Chery’s first bipedal humanoid robot powered by embodied artificial intelligence. Developed in partnership with the tech firm AiMOGA, it represents Chery’s strategic expansion beyond automotive manufacturing into the “third growth curve” of robotics and intelligent services, a glimpse into the broader ecosystem of technology Chery is developing.

Growing presence in South Africa

With new brands, advanced hybrid systems and AI-driven innovation, Chery is positioning itself as a technology-focused automotive company aiming to compete with established global manufacturers.

For South African motorists, the upcoming launches expected in March and May 2026 could bring more choice, new technology and competitive pricing to the local market.

As the Chinese automaker continues to grow its presence locally, the next few months could prove significant for buyers interested in the latest SUVs and hybrid vehicles entering South Africa.

Why do you think Cherry made the AiMOGA robot female?
