As African and Chinese leaders gear up for the upcoming Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing this September, China has sent a naval hospital ship, the Peace Ark, to provide medical assistance to African countries, including Mozambique and South Africa.

Earlier this month, China’s Minister Liu Jinchao visited South Africa to strengthen the deepening relations between China and South Africa.

The Peace Ark is a well-equipped naval hospital ship with over 300 beds, 16 medical departments, eight operating rooms, and a helicopter for medical rescues. Since its launch in 2007, the ship has visited over 45 countries and treated more than 290,000 patients. Before arriving in Cape Town, the Peace Ark spent seven days in Mozambique, where it provided medical care to over 7,300 patients, performed 74 surgeries, and treated a record 1,658 patients in a single day.

This visit to Cape Town follows Minister Liu Jinchao’s recent visit to South Africa, part of efforts to bolster China-South Africa and China-Africa relations. The Peace Ark's mission highlights the growing solidarity and cooperation between China and African countries, reflecting the strong partnership established by President Xi Jinping and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

China's support in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, including providing vaccines, medical equipment, and expertise, has strengthened its ties with Africa. This ongoing cooperation is crucial as both sides continue to face health challenges and work together for a shared future.
