JOHANNESBURG – As Africa’s mining industry continues to demand greater equipment reliability, energy efficiency and operational resilience, WEG Africa is showcasing a new generation of severe-duty electric motors engineered to withstand some of the harshest industrial environments.
Visitors to Electra Mining Africa 2026, taking place from 7 to 11 September at Nasrec in Johannesburg, will have an opportunity to inspect WEG’s latest severe-duty motor technologies, including the W22 Severe Duty and W22 Prime IE5 models.
Mining operations place extraordinary demands on electrical equipment. Rock crushers, pumps, conveyor systems and gearboxes require motors capable of delivering substantial starting and peak torque. However, raw power alone is not enough to guarantee long-term performance in environments characterised by extreme temperatures, abrasive dust, moisture, vibration and corrosive substances.

Special shaft seals, bearing insulation and Class H insulation, with thermal capacity of up to 180°C, contribute to improved resilience in demanding industrial applications.
According to Fanie Steyn, LV and HV Executive for WEG Africa’s Electric Motor division, selecting the right motor for the application can deliver significant long-term benefits.

“With IE3 and higher energy standards becoming more widespread through Minimum Energy Performance Standards adoption, quality severe-duty motors can recover their investment costs through energy savings while delivering dependable long-term performance.”

The motors are also available to meet IE3, IE4 and IE5 energy-efficiency standards, reflecting the growing importance of energy optimisation across mining and heavy industry.
